Your Guide to Back-Up Power in the GTA
Power outages are becoming more frequent and unpredictable. Whether it’s a severe winter ice storm or summer grid overload, losing power means losing your heating, cooling, refrigeration, and peace of mind.
At Energy Electrical Contracting Ltd., we help homeowners prepare for the unexpected by installing safe, code-compliant backup power systems. The two most popular and effective solutions we install are Generac Home Standby Generators and GenerLink Meter-Mounted Transfer Switches.
Not sure which one is right for you? Read our guide below to understand how they work, how they compare, and which system best fits your home and budget.
A Generac Home Standby Generator is a permanently installed system that sits outside your home, similar to a central air conditioning unit. It is connected directly to your home’s electrical panel and runs on your home’s existing natural gas or liquid propane (LP) supply.
How it works
The system includes an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). The ATS constantly monitors the utility power coming into your home. The second it detects an outage, it automatically safely disconnects your home from the grid and signals the generator to start. Within seconds, your home’s power is restored. When utility power returns, the system automatically switches back and shuts the generator down.
Key Benefits
-
100% Automatic: You don't have to lift a finger, run extension cords, or go outside in a storm. It works whether you are home or away on vacation.
-
No Refueling: Because it runs on natural gas or propane, you never have to worry about storing dangerous gasoline or refueling a tank in the dark.
-
Whole-Home Power: Capable of running heavy loads like your furnace, central AC, well pump, and electric range simultaneously.

GenerLink Transfer Switches
The Flexible, Portable Solution

The GenerLink is a meter-mounted transfer switch that provides a safe, simple way to connect a portable generator to your home’s electrical panel.
How it works
Our licensed electricians install the GenerLink collar directly behind your existing utility meter. During a power outage, you roll out your portable generator and plug it directly into the GenerLink port using a specialized cord. Because it connects at the meter, you can power any circuit in your home (up to the capacity of your generator and transfer switch) just by flipping the breakers in your normal electrical panel.
Key Benefits
-
Cost-Effective: Significantly lower upfront cost compared to a fully automatic standby system.
-
No Extension Cords: Eliminates the danger of running multiple extension cords through open windows and doors.
-
Flexibility: You can buy the portable generator of your choice, or even take your generator with you if you go camping.
